Elementary, My Dear Sky Captain

So there’s a new Sherlock Holmes movie coming out—check out the hi-def trailer. It has plenty of swashbuckling, pugilism, and double-entendres, along with (I assume), long exposition of brilliant deduction from Iron Man Holmes. I’m not familiar enough with the Holmes canon to know if this will be a travesty of modern re-imagining, or if it’s within the spirit of Doyle’s original Holmes. I need to finally get back into my Complete Sherlock Holmes to see, though it’s a safe bet that there are Holmes fanboys pre-emptively tearing the movie apart on the internets. I am sorry to see that there is no mention of Moriarty on the imdb page, but I suppose every movie needs to leave room for a sequel these days.

Nerds seem to have an affinity for Holmes. Two immediate examples that come to mind: TNG’s Holmes episodes, and Jon Bellairs’ Lewis Barnavelt, who dons his own deerstalker to solve mysteries. Anyone know of more nerdy tie-ins?

Extra credit: this post contains some blatant fanboy-bait; I assume any true Holmes fan is frothing at the mouth to point out my error. Find it!

I suppose I’m not a true fan, but my bet is on “travesty of modern re-imagining”. Not that it won’t make a good movie, but I’ll be surprised to see if a movie with that many explosions and super-slo-mo/muscle-rippling shots would be true to something as understated and pithy as the Holmes novels. Not that I won’t see it, as it looks entertaining enough, but I expect it to diverge pretty significantly from the feel of most Holmes novels.

Have either of you guys seen the PBS Sherlock Holmes show with (the late, I believe) Jeremy Brett? Brett will always be the iconic screen incarnation of Holmes for me.

The bait is that Holmes is never described as every wearing a deerstalker in Doyle’s stories. The connection came from illustrations. I quote, “Later uninformed depictions of Holmes that describe him wearing this hat in the city fail to take into account that the fashion-conscious Holmes would never commit such a sartorial faux pas; the deerstalker is traditionally a rural outdoorsman’s cap, not the appropriate headgear for the properly-dressed urban gentleman. “

Frothing at the mouth, indeed.

*Note: I was curious about the bait and reading it over it seemed like the deer stalker was the only thing you wrote that could be taken out of context.. so a little wikipedia research was in order. I, too, own the complete works and haven’t read any of them.

I bet it’s the “elementary” thing, which I gather he never said?

I’m not sure about this. Hugh Laurie should play Holmes, he’s been practicing for years with House, which I think we’re all pretty sick of by now. Jude Law as Watson? I’m…hesitant. I’m glad Irene Adler is in it though.

Everyone waiting with bated breath, wait no longer.

The official fanboy-bait was indeed the “elementary” quote, which is not Holmes canon (http://www.snopes.com/quotes/signature/elementary.asp). Well done, angry teti.

However, Ryan T deserves some of that credit because the deerstalker is another bit of Holmes lore I didn’t realize was apocryphal. Well done.
