End of the Spear

So I finally got around to watching this latest evangelical foray into Hollywoodland.  A bit disappointing.

First the good.  The production values and character performances were quite decent.  Lots of nice shots of the rainforest (with some cool views of the yellow Piper Cub airplane zipping around).  The native tribe members in particular gave some great performances.  The male missionaries, strangly enough, came across as morons–although certainly devote and earnest morons.

Now the bad.  I thought the pacing and storytelling, particularly in the second half, was awful.  Huge and essential parts of the tribe’s journey from murderous barbarism to peaceful gospel-land were missing.  I don’t know if they had to trim for time, or if they were skimping on the gospel to appeal to a wider market.  The amazing story of these missionaries, and especially the courage and faith of the wives, stands by itself.  I think they could have done a better job of putting that story on film.

That’s disappointing, I’d been planning on watching that some time. Probably still will, but won’t expect too much.
